Cosmetic surgery is a popular procedure that can bring many significant benefits to patients. But it also comes with a high risk for serious complications. The risks are not always fully disclosed to patients which can create a lot of stress for them. There are inherent risks to surgery as it is an invasive procedure. Some of these risks are higher than others, however.
Vicarious experience
Vicarious trauma is when someone experiences traumatic events from the perspective of another person. Professional help is available to help with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Individuals can also share their concerns and experiences with friends and family. While it may be difficult to discuss the experience, individuals should avoid taking a loved one's reactions personally. They should carry on with their day and be in touch with their family and friends.
Self-rated attractiveness
A study was done to determine if adolescents' self-rated physical attractiveness correlates with their psychological well-being. Participants were asked to rate themselves on their physical attractiveness, self-reported self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The results revealed that male adolescents felt more attractive than their female counterparts. However, the negative association between self-rated attraction and internalized distress was found in girls. These associations only reached statistical significance in girls, and occurred only in relation to suicidal ideation and self-harmed behavior.
Religiousness
Researchers have found that people's religious beliefs can influence their decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. Specifically, individuals who are more religious were less likely to have cosmetic surgery than nonreligious individuals. It is still unclear if there is a relationship between religion and the risks of cosmetic surgery.
Household income
A correlation was found between household incomes, and the possibility of having cosmetic surgery. The results suggest that individuals with higher incomes are more likely to undergo this procedure than those with lower incomes. The researchers used the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics' measure of gross household income to assess SES. It is an accepted method for assessing SES. It has been proven that it can reflect health disparities across socioeconomic groups.
Liquid silicone facial injections
While liquid silicone injections are a common cosmetic procedure, there are still risks. Some patients may experience temporary swelling and bruising. Others may suffer serious complications such as inflammatory reactions. Additionally, liquid silicone injections could migrate into other parts of your body and cause permanent damage. The treatment can cause heart attack in extreme cases.
Infections
Patients are at risk of infection after cosmetic surgery. Although they are very rare, infections can still happen even with antibacterial medications. Different microorganisms may cause these infections. Most commonly, they are caused by Staphylococci or streptococci. However, infections from non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) have also been reported. These infections can be difficult for standard gram staining to detect and are resistant to many antibacterial drugs.
